Jan. 28, 2010 - Springfield, OR, USA - Briggs Middle School eighth grader Kyle Springer, 8, celebrates his second place finish in the crazy hat contest at the school Thursday. Students have been paying 50 cents a day to wear hats since last Friday to raise money for relief in Haiti. Students have raised 11.69.

Jan. 28, 2010 - Springfield, OR, USA - When Briggs Middle School eighth grader Kortney Myers watched television reports of the earthquake devastation in Haiti, she wanted to help. Myers suggested to principal Brooke Wagner that the money they raise on their weekly hat-wearing fundraiser be sent to help students in Haiti. Students pay 50 cents to wear a hat on Friday's to raise money for various school and community programs and events..The one-day event, which started last Friday, was expanded to a week, with students raising a total of11.69 through hat wearing and other donations. Students are doing research to determine which charity would be best to get their money to students in Haiti..Student Services coordinator Kathy McCumsey said, ''We are really proud of our kids here. It's a nice way to educate our students.
